The US is sending more troops to the Middle East, according to the Pentagon.
There are currently around 40,000 troops stationed in the region.
This was in response to escalating violence between Israeli and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon.
The US will send a small number of additional troops to the Middle East, the Pentagon said on Monday, following a surge in violence between Israeli and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, raising the risk of an escalating regional war.
Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder declined to say how many additional troops would be sent or what their mission would be. The US currently has about 40,000 troops in the region.
On Monday, the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman, two Navy destroyers and one cruiser departed Norfolk, Virginia, for a routine deployment to the 6th Fleet area of Europe. The departure of the ships may lead the U.S. to keep the Truman and the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, which is in the Arabian Gulf, in the region in case further violence erupts.
“Given the heightened tensions in the Middle East and out of an abundance of caution, we are deploying a small number of additional U.S. military personnel to augment the forces already deployed in the region,” Ryder said, “however, for operational security reasons we will not be commenting or providing any specifics.”
