US starts important antimony mining project to address Chinese control

Exclusive: U.S. Opens First Mine for Key Minerals

The Trump administration is overseeing the launch of the first mine in the U.S. that will extract vital minerals, notably antimony, which has been largely under Chinese control—responsible for about fifty percent of global production, according to recent reports.

This operation in Idaho aims to reduce reliance on foreign entities, such as the Chinese Communist Party, by producing antimony, a crucial metalloid used in various aspects of the defense and technology sectors. This mineral is essential for applications including nighttime goggles, explosives, flame retardants, and even military clothing and ammunition.

Antimony also has a role in advancing artificial intelligence technologies, serving as a component in semiconductors and infrared systems, while enhancing the durability of alloys like lead and copper.

Concerns Over China’s Solar Technology

While not classified as a rare earth element on the periodic table, antimony holds significant importance and is less common than other elements.

Doug Burgham, Secretary of the Interior, played a crucial role in this initiative to boost U.S. control over energy resources and key minerals. It’s worth noting that the antimony stibnite mines can also yield gold.

The mine’s opening reflects a broader strategy to enhance national security and economic stability by decreasing reliance on foreign suppliers. Officials like Burgham and others are dedicated to this cause.

The National Energy Dominance Council, created in February through an executive order, has been instrumental in facilitating this mine’s development, with Burgham and Energy Secretary Chris Wright heavily involved.

Burgum recently issued 404 permits to Boise’s Perpetua Resources, covering various operational aspects, including waste management.

The Shift in U.S. Energy Landscape

Perpetua’s President John Cherry described the achievement as the result of eight years of diligent work and research. “We’re proud to hit this milestone. It’s time to advance the Stibnite Gold project into a promising new phase,” he stated.

Cherry expressed confidence in the current administration’s focus on efficient operations without sacrificing environmental standards, which he believes could be transformative for American mining.

The project is anticipated to create around 550 jobs and is expected to produce over 400,000 ounces of precious metals annually in the next four years. The antimony reserve, valued at approximately £148 million, will be the only one of its kind in the United States and the largest outside of China.

This initiative might also decrease foreign dependence on critical minerals by a third.
