US strikes ISIS in Syria amid Assad’s downfall

US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Sunday conducted dozens of airstrikes against known ISIS camps and operatives in central Syria to prevent the terrorist group from exploiting the fall of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad's regime. .

After his family ruled Syria for more than 50 years, Assad was forced to flee Syria to Russia, where a coalition of mostly Islamic extremist groups led an all-out offensive across Syria and captured the capital. At that time, he was granted asylum.

Centcom announced on Sunday that it had carried out attacks against ISIS leaders, operatives and camps as part of its ongoing mission to “disrupt, weaken and defeat ISIS.”

Specifically, CENTCOM is working to prevent ISIS from taking advantage of the current situation to regroup in central Syria and to prevent the terrorist organization from conducting operations.
