U.S. Women’s Ice Hockey Team Dominates Canada

The U.S. women’s ice hockey team is proving to be an unstoppable force. They kicked off the Milan-Cortina tournament with a solid 5-0 win against Canada, marking their fourth victory in a row. Interestingly, this win also continues a streak of three consecutive games with the same score.

In this match, Hilary Knight made history by tying the U.S. record for career points in Olympic women’s hockey with an assist during the first period.

The Americans scored two goals in each of the first two periods, with Hannah Birka accounting for both of her goals thanks to Abby Murphy’s assistance. This victory pushes the U.S. to a seven-game winning streak against Canada—just one win shy of tying the historical record between the two teams. So far, they’ve outscored their rivals 25-1, with only the Czechs managing to find the net in their earlier match.

This game sets the stage for the gold medal showdown, as the U.S. and Canada have faced each other in six of the last seven Olympic gold medal games. Of these, Canada has claimed four victories, including the last one in 2022.

Over the years, the two nations have clashed in the gold medal match at nearly every major international tournament, such as the IIHF Women’s World Championships and the Four Nations Cup. The last time they didn’t meet in a gold medal game was in 2019, while the U.S. has maintained a strong record of reaching gold medal matches despite Canada’s fewer successes in these high-stakes showdowns.

Looking ahead, the knockout stage is scheduled for Friday, with semi-finals on Monday, and medal matches set for February 19th.
