The USA vs. Belgium Soccer Match: A Historic Loss
The United States faced off against Belgium in the Round of 16 and, well, it was quite a memorable night—though perhaps not in the way many had hoped. The match ended in a 4-1 defeat for the USMNT, but that wasn’t the only notable aspect; it also broke viewership records, attracting 30 million viewers—making it the most-watched soccer game in American history. Peak viewership, interestingly, reached nearly 36.9 million between 9:15 and 9:30 PM ET.
Sadly, the US team couldn’t deliver the performance the massive audience was hoping for. Even with Folarin Balogun’s suspension lifted, they struggled to generate enough offensive pressure.
Belgium capitalized on an early defensive misstep from the US, with Charles de Ketelaere finding the net just nine minutes into the match. It was a rough start for the Americans, a situation compounded by that lapse in defense.
Malik Tillman, known for his stunning free kick in the previous round against Bosnia and Herzegovina, pulled things level at 1-1 in the 31st minute. His shot deflected off a defender, sending the Seattle crowd into a frenzy but, unfortunately, that joy didn’t last long. De Ketelaere would score again just two minutes later, regaining the lead for Belgium at 2-1.
After halftime, the US tried to shift momentum in their favor. Yet, a crucial mistake by goalkeeper Matt Frees dashed their hopes when he misplayed a ball and allowed Belgium’s Hans Vanaken to make it 3-1 in the 57th minute.
Despite numerous opportunities, the USMNT struggled to penetrate the solid Belgian defense, a frustrating sight for fans. It seemed like they just needed that one breakthrough, but it never came.
To cap off their victory, Belgium introduced Romelu Lukaku, who added a stoppage-time goal—bringing the final score to 4-1.
Even with the loss, the USMNT resonated with fans across the country during the tournament, and their journey captivated millions, as seen in those historic ratings.
