USA Fencing Updates Gender Eligibility Policy
USA Fencing has revised its gender eligibility policy, allowing biological men to compete in women’s events after facing extensive criticism over the past few months. The organization announced that its policy now states that “Athletes who are female gender, provided all other entry criteria are met,” can compete in women’s competitions.
This new guideline is set to take effect next month.
Previously, the policy indicated that biological men could enter women’s competitions only after undergoing a year of testosterone suppression treatment. There was also a focus on making the female category exclusive to female athletes. However, the new policy seems to lack that exclusivity.
When asked for clarification about whether the update prevents all biological men from competing in women’s events, USA Fencing did not provide specific answers. They also did not clarify how the policy would be enforced or whether testing or amended birth certificates would be required.
According to a statement from USA Fencing, these changes were a response to new guidelines issued by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC). The USOPC’s updated athlete safety guidelines, released on July 18, 2025, have prompted USA Fencing to adopt a new transgender and non-binary participation policy.
USA Fencing expressed its commitment to fairness and athlete welfare, emphasizing that the updates are aimed at aligning with national standards.
The situation gained increased scrutiny following an incident involving female fencer Stephanie Turner, who protested against competing against a trans woman during a Maryland competition and was subsequently disqualified. This has led to various legal challenges and discussions within the organization about its policies.
In recent months, USA Fencing has faced backlash over its policies and their implications, resulting in lawsuits from board members alleging misleading statements given during congressional hearings regarding the issues at hand. The organization maintains that it operates with transparency and integrity, while also expressing its goal to support all members and advance the sport nationally.
