Adam Fox Omitted from Team USA’s Olympic Roster
MIAMI — Adam Fox’s absence from the upcoming Winter Olympics became official on Friday as USA Hockey unveiled the 25-man roster for the 2026 Milan-Cortina games.
The notification was given to the Rangers’ top defenseman on Wednesday by Team USA general manager Bill Guerin.
This decision took many in the National Hockey League by surprise, though there were whispers about it after Fox’s participation in last season’s Four-Country Tournament.
Interestingly, both Guerin and Canadian GM Bill Armstrong declined to elaborate on the reasoning behind the exclusions.
When questioned about concerns that the decision might have been swayed by Fox’s play during Connor McDavid’s overtime goal in the 4-Nations championship, Guerin was quick to push back on that idea. He stated, “That’s exactly what it is. It’s a perception. You guys can discuss it; that’s not for us. If you think we based our choice on one play, then we aren’t as wise as you think.” He emphasized that the matter was settled and they were moving ahead.
That specific play, where Fox seemed to chase the action leaving Auston Matthews out of position, was likely not the sole factor. Yet, it’s believed that overall performance in that tournament disappointed Team USA officials.
Rumors circulated about the likelihood of Fox being left off the roster for the NHL’s first international game since 2014.
Excluding a standout American defenseman from the roster carries considerable risks.
Fox is one of two players from Team USA’s Four Nations squad to experience a team change, alongside former Rangers teammate Chris Kreider.
This decision could potentially harm U.S. Hockey’s prospects again.
Fox defended his overall performance in the NHL, noting, “I thought the way I played this year was solid. Achievements matter, but sometimes things are out of my hands. A decision is a decision, and that’s just how it goes.”
Head coach Mike Sullivan, assistant coach David Quinn, and president Chris Drury all advocated strongly for Fox’s inclusion.
Sure, their attempts seemed to fall flat.
Fox was one of the Rangers’ most reliable skaters until a shoulder injury forced him to sit out for 14 games. Ultimately, the call is Guerin’s, and it reflects the greater organization’s view of both Fox and the Rangers.
Meanwhile, Canadian coach Jon Cooper might leverage his influence to encourage Armstrong to swap Anthony Cirelli for a player like Sam Bennett from the Panthers.
Sullivan, Quinn, and Drury just couldn’t persuade Guerin to include Fox. He acknowledged, “Adam and I have discussed this thoroughly, and we’ll keep those details private. What matters is that the team selected is the best of the best. Making these decisions is tough and involves input from everyone involved.” He added, “We aim to be as professional and honest as possible with everyone touched by this, but Foxy and I have shared many discussions that will remain between us.”
