USA hockey's Quinn Hughes expresses admiration for America after remarkable victory

American fans have been eager for athletes to show their patriotism during the Olympics.

With the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics, viewers are hoping to find heroes after a string of athletes criticized U.S. law enforcement, voiced their discontent with the current administration, and even opted to represent China.

One athlete stepping up is Quinn Hughes, a 26-year-old from Florida who plays for the Minnesota Wild in the NHL. He recently scored the game-winning goal in extra time against Sweden, securing a 2-1 victory that sent Team USA to the semifinals on Wednesday.

After the match, NBC News sports editor Greg Rosenstein shared an interview with Hughes about his dramatic performance. He noted the overwhelming presence of American flags in the stands and his feelings as the crowd chanted “USA!”

“What’s the atmosphere like?” the reporter inquired.

“That’s special,” Hughes responded. “I love America; it’s the greatest country in the world. I’m happy to represent that with them here.”

“It’s really special,” added the defender.

Unfortunately, the Olympics have also faced harsh political commentary, such as that from American figure skater Amber Glenn, who expressed concerns about “human rights” under President Trump.

Earlier in February, athlete Gus Kenworthy, who has both American and British heritage, posted a photo suggesting disdain for an immigration officer, captioning it in a provocative way.

Political tensions have even impacted Olympic preparations, as a hotel in Milan that was supposed to host American athletes changed its name from Ice House to Winter House. This was reportedly done to create a “private space free of distractions.”

Hughes’ goal followed a memorable win for the U.S. women’s hockey team, who triumphed over Canada in overtime 2-1. Their matchup could lead to yet another final between the two teams.

The U.S. men’s team is set to face Slovakia Friday at 3:10 PM ET. If they win and Canada defeats Finland, the stage is set for a highly-anticipated showdown. The gold medal match is scheduled to air on Sunday, February 22, at 8:10 AM ET.

It’s worth noting that the last time Canada secured a gold medal in men’s ice hockey was in 2014, marking their third win in four Olympics, two of which were against the U.S.

For context, the U.S. hasn’t claimed a gold medal since the iconic “Miracle on Ice” team in 1980 at Lake Placid. Currently, the U.S. is tied with Sweden for the third-most gold medals in men’s hockey, boasting two, while Canada and the former Soviet Union/Russia each have nine.
