USA mixed 4x100M medley relay team breaks world record to win gold at Olympics

Pool gold has been hard to come by for the U.S., but their recent gold medal win has been impressive.

The mixed 4×100 medley relay team set a world record on Saturday to win the gold medal.

The foursome of Ryan Murphy, Gretchen Walsh, Nick Fink and Tori Huske swam the race in 3:37.43, beating the world record by a quarter of a second (China came in second in 3:37.55, also breaking the previous world record).

It was the sixth gold medal in the swimming pool for the United States, now one behind Australia.

This was Huske’s second gold medal of the tournament. She also won the women’s 100m butterfly (Walsh won silver). Huske also won silver in the women’s 100m freestyle and the 4x100m freestyle relay with Walsh.

This came a day after the mixed 4×400 relay track team set a world record in the event, but had to settle for silver in Saturday’s final.

Great Britain, China and Australia each took the top three places in the event, which was held for the first time in Tokyo, while the USA was represented by Murphy, Lydia Jacoby, Husk and eight-time gold medalist Caleb Dressel, who finished in fifth place.

The world record was the American’s second gold medal of the day in the pool, just minutes after Katie Ledecky won her record-breaking ninth gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle.
