In the bronze-medal game between the United States and Australia in women’s rugby sevens on Tuesday, the U.S. lost by just five points in the final seconds – nearly the length of the field.
That’s when Alex Cedric took the problem into his own hands.
Cedric surged through the Australians to score a walk-off run to tie the game and then the ensuing conversion gave the U.S. the bronze medal. Watch as Cedric finds his opportunity and drops a powerful arm like Derrick Henry has shown in years.
Cedric’s run caused chaos along the U.S. sideline, but the U.S. needed a conversion to secure the win, and she remained calm on her mark, making it work and earning the bronze medal.
Madison Levy scored for Australia with just over five minutes remaining to extend their lead, but Levy missed the conversion and the score remained 12-7. After the missed conversion, Australia kicked deep and put the USA 85 metres from the goal, but the missed conversion created a chance for the USA to perform a miracle.
They did.
The United States’ bronze medal also made history, as it was the first women’s rugby medal in Olympic history for the USA.
