USD/JPY Price Outlook: 50-day SMA limits recovery around 158.00

Japanese Yen stays under 160.00 after Q1 GDP figures

The USD/JPY sees a slight increase of 0.08% on Wednesday. This is in response to US inflation data that has decreased expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike at the upcoming meeting on October 28. Currently, the pair is trading at 157.42.

USD/JPY Price Forecast: Technical Outlook

Currently, the price action suggests a neutral to downward trend for USD/JPY, which follows the recent intervention by US and Japanese authorities. This action moved the pair from around 160.00 down to 153.00, though it has since regained some value to reach the present exchange rate.

While the momentum seemed to favor buyers initially, sellers have recently made their presence felt, especially as the Relative Strength Index (RSI) reached a peak at 60 before settling back to the neutral 50 level. This indicates that further consolidation may be on the horizon.

For the USD/JPY to show bullish movement, it will need to rise above the 50-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) at 158.28. If it does, the next resistance points are at 159.00 and the 100-day SMA at 159.57, with 160.00 to follow.

Conversely, if USD/JPY falls below today’s low of 156.38, it could challenge the 156.00 mark. A drop below that threshold would expose the low from May 6 at 155.04, then the September 8 low at 152.89.
