According to U.S. Department of Agriculture food safety inspections, all prepared meat and poultry produced by Bruce Pack, Durant, Oklahoma, from May 31 to Oct. 8 is no longer considered safe.

The company expanded its initial recall list of 9.9 million pounds of food purchased at schools and stores in areas including Pennsylvania, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee and Indiana to 11 million pounds.

The company first announced the recall on Oct. 11, and said as of Oct. 17, it had not seen any reports of side effects from consuming these products.

The USDA has discovered that blue packs are ready to eat chicken as a source of Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium can cause listeriosis, which can cause fever, muscle pain, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, followed by diarrhea.

This effect can be life-threatening for older people and people with weakened immune systems, and can cause miscarriage in pregnant women.

The recall comes in the wake of a deadly Boar's Head Listeria outbreak currently being investigated by lawmakers.
