Over the weekend, links to shared conversations from Anthropic’s Claude AI assistant appeared in Google search results, making sensitive user discussions publicly accessible.
According to a report, it was discovered that numerous chats from Claude AI can now be found easily via Google searches. Users can input specific queries like “site:claude.ai/share” to uncover conversations containing legal advice, engineering details, and personal chats without needing a direct link from the original owner.
The Claude AI platform has a sharing feature that creates public URLs for users to share their conversations. However, a Reddit discussion noted that these shared pages didn’t include the necessary “noindex” tags, which usually prevent search engines from indexing them. If these links are shared on forums or social media—or even mistakenly published—search engines can access and index the full content, making it searchable.
The indexed conversations seem to cover a broad range of sensitive topics. This includes accessible discussions about legal strategies from attorneys, troubleshooting and code snippets from software engineers, as well as personal conversations. It raises concerns about privacy.
This situation is reminiscent of past occurrences with ChatGPT shared links, where users found their so-called private chats transformed into searchable web pages available to anyone with the right search terms.
As of Sunday, many of the affected Claude-shared links appeared to have vanished from search results. This could indicate either a swift response to the issue with deindexing or a backend fix by Anthropic. As of the initial reporting, the company hadn’t made any official comments on the matter.
Experts in security and privacy note that simply removing content from search results has limitations. While a link may no longer show up in Google, the original shared URL remains accessible to anyone who had previously saved it. Unless Anthropic takes measures to revoke access to these links, users can still view the conversation content.
The nature of shared conversations with AI often exceeds simple questions. Professionals utilize tools like Claude to draft contracts, debug code, analyze sensitive data, and discuss private matters.
