USMNT eliminated from Copa America 2024 with loss to Uruguay

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The United States was eliminated from the Copa America on Monday night after a questionable late goal by Matias Olivera cost them a 1-0 loss to Uruguay, a loss that will increase pressure on the U.S. Soccer Federation to fire coach Gregg Berhalter before the 2026 World Cup.

Uruguay scored from a free kick by Nicolas de la Cruz in front of the United States goal.

Matt Turner outjumped defender Tim Ream and parried a header from Ronald Araujo, but the rebound found its way to Matias Olivera, who smashed the ball in with his left foot.

Olivera’s initial header appeared to be offside, but the goal was allowed after video review.
