USS George Washington to Replace USS Abraham Lincoln in Middle East
The United States is dispatching a new aircraft carrier to the Middle East amid ongoing tensions with Iran.
Reports from major news outlets indicate that the USS George Washington will take over the duties of the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been stationed in the region since January.
Having left its home port back in November, the USS Abraham Lincoln played a significant role in Operation Epic Fury and has been involved in maintaining naval blockades on Iranian ports.
Navy officials have stated that this transition is part of a planned rotation. However, it’s worth noting that many sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln have expressed concerns about extended deployment periods and deteriorating living conditions.
The USS George Washington was recently operating in the South China Sea and has just completed a port visit to Da Nang, Vietnam. It is estimated that the carrier will take about a week to arrive in the Middle East.
Details regarding the USS Abraham Lincoln’s return to San Diego, California, have not been disclosed by military officials yet.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth conveyed that President Trump appreciates the efforts of the crews stationed on both ships. He emphasized that the administration is dedicated to facilitating the rotation of the carriers as efficiently as possible.
“I want folks rotated as quickly as possible,” he mentioned. “I want the best for them; my commanders and service secretaries understand that, and the president expects it.”
Hegseth also expressed gratitude, saying, “To that crew and all others, we will do everything we can for you. We are incredibly grateful for their commitment. They’ve upheld their responsibilities for the country exceptionally well.”
