Milan Women’s Hockey Tournament: USA Dominates Czech Republic
The United States kicked off the Milan-Cortina women’s hockey tournament on Thursday with an impressive 5-1 victory against the Czech Republic. Hayley Skamura played a standout role, scoring two goals. Alex Carpenter contributed with a goal and an assist, while captain Hilary Knight and Joy Dunn also found the net. This win marked a significant improvement from their previous encounter, where the U.S. had dominated the Czechs 8-0. Aerin Frankel, making her Olympic debut in goal, made 13 saves during the match.
Significantly, Lyla Edwards recorded an assist, making history as the first Black woman to represent the U.S. in Olympic hockey, a noteworthy moment for the team.
For the Czech Republic, Barbora Yurikova scored their lone goal, bringing the score to 3-1 in the second period after a penalty. Klara Peslarova, the Czech goalie, faced a barrage of shots, totaling 37 saves, while the Americans outshot their opponents 31-9 through two periods.
This marks the Czech Republic’s second Olympic appearance, but they faced the U.S. previously in the quarterfinals at the 2022 Beijing Games and lost. In world championship competitions, they have a dismal record against the Americans, going 0-6.
Interestingly, the day’s only Group A matchup, featuring defending champions Canada versus Finland, was postponed to February 12 due to illness impacting Finland’s roster.
The atmosphere in the rink was electric, with fans erupting in cheers for Team USA as soon as the game began. It was pretty special to witness the chant of “USA!” as the puck dropped.
Skamura’s performance really showcased the potential of the U.S. team. As the 13th forward, her versatility could be a game-changer, and she has already doubled her Olympic scoring tally after netting once in Beijing.
Carpenter started the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period, tipping in a shot from Megan Keller. The second period saw a surge from the Americans, who scored three times, quickly extending their lead to 4-1. Skamura and Dunn scored just 86 seconds apart early in that period.
Meanwhile, Knight, who is heading into what will be her final Olympic appearance, demonstrated her skills yet again. She received a pass from Carpenter, maneuvered past a defender, and skillfully placed her shot past Pesralova for the goal.
In other tournament action, Sweden managed to come from behind against Germany, winning 4-1. Lina Ljungblom scored twice, helping Sweden turn the tide after Germany initially took the lead.
A win against Germany would be crucial for Sweden as they aim for better seeding in the quarterfinals. The top teams from both groups will advance to the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the host nation, Italy, celebrated a victorious 4-1 win over France, marking their first win in their second Olympic outing. This match took place at the Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena, which has faced criticisms due to delays in its construction.
