Utah governor describes Charlie Kirk shooting as a political assassination

Tragic Shooting Declared a “Political Assassination” by Utah Governor

In a somber statement on Wednesday evening, Utah Governor Spencer Cox characterized the shootings of the Turning Point USA founder, Charlie Kirk, and two others as “political assassinations,” asserting that such acts strike at the very essence of American democracy.

“This is a dark day for our nation, a tragic day,” noted Cox. He emphasized that every individual should denounce this act as a disgrace to the idea that all people are endowed with certain unalienable rights.

The Republican governor reminded everyone that Kirk was not just a political figure but also a devoted husband and father to young children. His passion for free speech, he pointed out, was what brought Kirk to the campus.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Safety Concerns

Kirk was a notable figure in conservative youth movements and was in Utah for his “American Comeback Tour.” The shooting occurred at Utah Valley University, where he was engaged in outreach.

Authorities reported that the shooter had fired from a nearby rooftop, hitting Kirk around 12:10 PM. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Ongoing efforts to apprehend the assailant continued into the night.

FBI Director Kash Patel indicated that a suspect was in custody following interrogation, but that the investigation remained active, with updates promised for transparency.

“We will find you and hold you accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” vowed Governor Cox, who reiterated that the death penalty still exists in Utah.

Reflections on Violent Political Climate

During his address, Cox lamented the increasing frequency of politically motivated violence across the nation, highlighting incidents from Minnesota to assassination attempts on public figures.

“Our country is broken,” he stated, referencing the shooting in Minnesota as well as thwarted assassination attempts against notable figures, including past and current presidents.

Nothing I can say can bring Charlie Kirk back… We lament as a nation.

He added, “Our hearts are broken. We are grieving alongside his family and friends. We mourn as a nation.”

Governor Cox, recently re-elected, has faced scrutiny over his support of President Trump despite previous criticisms. His statements call for unity in the wake of this tragic event while recognizing the broader issues of political violence.
