Senator Calls for Investigation into Trump Jr. Following Wedding Controversy
On Tuesday, Republican Senator John Curtis of Utah urged for an investigation into Donald Trump Jr. regarding revelations that a Russian oligarch, linked to the Kremlin, may have funded his wedding afterparty in the Bahamas.
Curtis sent a letter to Judiciary Committee leaders, Senators Chuck Grassley and Dick Durbin, requesting a closer look at the “use of presidential family relationships for private financial advantage or access by both domestic and foreign interests.” He emphasized the need for the committee to subpoena Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden, due to Hunter’s significant business dealings with Chinese and Ukrainian entities while his father was vice president and campaigning for office.
He made a notable comparison, stating, “A toaster is a wedding gift. A private-island party paid for by a Putin-connected oligarch is something else.” Curtis highlighted that Republicans had thoroughly investigated Hunter Biden’s foreign connections and suggested that it should continue without hesitation. “‘Trust us’ wasn’t sufficient before, and it isn’t now,” he remarked on X.
Earlier in September, ProPublica revealed that the Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev had covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses for Trump Jr.’s wedding, including the rental of a private island and a fireworks display. Kremlev had been part of a delegation with President Vladimir Putin on a trip to China shortly before the May 24 wedding.
Curtis pointed to the Trump family’s cryptocurrency venture, World Liberty Financial (WLF), as well as Trump Jr.’s investments in defense firms and his position on the board of the prediction market company Kalshi.
He expressed concern that these reports raised important questions about foreign access to the family of a current president and whether such ties could lead to expectations of preferential treatment. Curtis noted that these relationships could potentially put national security at risk and also compromise the interests of the American public and allies.
There has been heightened scrutiny regarding the Trump family’s connection to the UAE through WLF. Just days before Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, UAE National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed al Nahyan provided a backing of $500 million to WLF, the amount undisclosed at the time. Following this, the Trump administration lifted restrictions placed during the Biden presidency on high-tech semiconductor sales, including allowing companies like Sheikh Tahnoun’s G42 to acquire U.S. chips.
Curtis concluded by stating that there shouldn’t be different standards for the families of Republican and Democratic presidents and that congressional oversight shouldn’t fluctuate with party control of the White House. He stressed that Americans should have trust that public institutions act in their best interests, rather than catering to wealthy families or political interests.
