Teen Accused of Double Homicide in Utah

A 17-year-old boy from Utah stands accused of murdering his mother and his 8-year-old half-brother. This allegation follows reports that a masked figure, resembling the teen, was seen on surveillance footage wandering the neighborhood shortly after the fatal shooting.

On August 14, police in Saratoga Springs arrested the teenager after a lengthy 17-month investigation. This inquiry utilized a multitude of search warrants, gathered extensive evidence, and underwent detailed forensic analysis. Following the arrest, the teen was placed in juvenile detention, and after discussions with the Utah County Attorney’s Office, two counts of first-degree murder were established against him.

In juvenile court, the charges escalated to two counts of aggravated murder and obstruction of justice, as detailed in court documents.

The authorities expressed intentions to transfer the case to adult district court. Interestingly, the teen’s identity remains undisclosed due to his juvenile status.

The tragic events date back to March 28, 2025, when police received a medical assistance call to the family’s home on Willowbrook Lane. They found Jessica Orton Lyman, aged 44, and her son, Eli Painter, 8, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, despite rescue efforts, they did not survive.

It was revealed that the victims’ bodies were discovered the following morning after Lyman’s teenage daughter returned home. A neighbor’s surveillance camera reportedly recorded an argument around 11:30 p.m. the night prior, which investigators think involved the teen and the victims. Shortly after, a voice reportedly matching Lyman’s was heard yelling, “What are you doing?!” just seconds before three gunshots were fired.

Further home surveillance footage allegedly depicted a masked figure walking through the area between 2:34 a.m. and 2:59 a.m. on that same night. Prosecutors claimed this figure’s height and build matched that of the teen and that his attire closely resembled items he had previously worn. The footage suggested the potential for the weapon to have been discarded in various locations, including the nearby Jordan River.

In efforts to recover evidence, FBI and local dive teams searched the river and nearby banks, but so far, no firearms have been found—only two BB guns located in the teen’s bedroom. Additional evidence reportedly included gunshot residue found on several clothing items worn by the teen the day the victims were discovered. His DNA was also claimed to have been detected under one victim’s nails and on the waistband of Lyman’s shorts.

A search warrant unsealed last year revealed that investigators found notes in the teen’s room referencing “serology,” “DNA,” and “firearm testing.” One note ominously stated, “This is a murder story.” The home was promptly secured as a crime scene, and the police began thoroughly documenting the area, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and exploring leads.

Detectives executed multiple search warrants over the ensuing months, collecting a substantial amount of evidence. As forensic results came in, investigators steadily continued to build the case. Saratoga Springs Police Chief Andrew Burton remarked that recent evidence and the total investigative work from the past 17 months led them to identify a suspect.

In a poignant statement, the Orton family expressed their profound grief, saying that not a day goes by without feeling the impact of their loss. They noted their longing for Jessica and Eli, emphasizing the light they brought into their lives. As they wait for justice, the family remains committed to honoring their memories.

Following the arrest, they conveyed gratitude towards the various agencies involved in the investigation, yet highlighted that no legal outcome could replace what was lost.

In a heartfelt tribute, family member Jason Painter remembered Lyman as a dedicated mom and Eli as a bright, loving child who filled the lives of those around him with joy. “They were so much more than the tragedy that took them,” he remarked. The family intends to preserve Jessica and Eli’s memories by cherishing the love they shared and the lives they lived.
