Utah University Temporarily Removes Football Player While Police Investigate Allegations of Rape and Video Posting

Jamal Wallace, a defensive tackle for the University of Utah, was suspended earlier this month and subsequently arrested on October 11, following allegations that he raped a woman.

The unnamed woman, who claimed she had an on-and-off relationship with Wallace, said in a probable cause statement that while discussing their relationship on October 9, he forced her into a sexual act before allegedly raping her.

According to the same statement, she also claimed that Wallace struck her multiple times.

The woman further alleged that Wallace recorded the incident and shared it on Snapchat. The Salt Lake City Police Department reportedly found these videos and noted that he had his phone when the recordings were made. After the incident, the victim expressed feelings of confusion and disgust and underwent a sexual assault examination, as detailed by the Salt Lake Tribune.

In a police interview, Wallace denied raping the woman; instead, he claimed he had accessed her Snapchat account to check her messages, according to arrest documents mentioned by ESPN.

He has been charged with distributing intimate images and faces five misdemeanor counts, although he has not been charged with sexual assault. After paying $5,000 in bail, he has been released. (RELATED: ‘#Notthemcnuggets’: NFL Suspends Two Players On Same Team For Separate Spitting Spats)

A representative from the University of Utah confirmed that Wallace is on indefinite suspension from the football team.

“We became aware of the situation involving Jamal Wallace on October 11, and he was immediately suspended indefinitely from the program,” the statement said, according to ESPN. “We take these matters seriously. As this is a pending legal issue, we will have no further comment at this time.”
