The Utah Utes will mark the end of an era on December 31 as they take on Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl.
This game will be particularly significant as it will be the final appearance of head coach Kyle Whittingham, who announced his retirement last Friday. At 66 years old, Whittingham leaves behind a remarkable legacy as the winningest coach in the program’s history, boasting a record of 117 wins to 88 losses over 22 seasons.
“It has been an honor and privilege to lead this program for the past 21 years,” Whittingham stated. He expressed deep gratitude for the relationships he forged with players and assistant coaches, who have all contributed to the team’s pride.
Whittingham initially co-coached the Fiesta Bowl at the University of Utah in 2004 and was named the head coach the following year. Remarkably, he secured victories in 18 of his 21 seasons.
This season, the University of Utah has seen success, finishing with a 10-2 record and at one point being ranked 13th in the Associated Press poll, just missing out on the College Football Playoff.
Whittingham, who was the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in his senior year in 1981, transitioned to coaching after playing in the USFL and CFL from 1982 to 1984. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at BYU.
Having joined Utah’s staff in 1994, he climbed the ranks from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator before ultimately becoming head coach.
In his final game on the sideline against Nebraska, Whittingham will aim to improve his bowl game record, which stands at 11 wins and 6 losses.
