VA Dem Tim Kaine warns against taking election for granted as Trump eyes blue state

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said he was taking Virginia’s November election seriously, despite the state’s recent trend toward Democrats.

“No one should take anything for granted in Virginia,” the senator told Fox News Digital.

“I know I’m not taking this for granted,” Cain added. “I don’t think anybody should ever take it for granted.”

Kaine is up for re-election in November. He was first elected to the Senate in 2012 and re-elected in 2018.

The Virginia Senate election is currently rated as a Democrat favorite by a nonpartisan political handicapper. Cook Political Report.

“We’ve supported a Democrat in four consecutive presidential elections, but that’s 44 years after a Republican won the presidential election, and our governor is a Republican,” Kaine explained, referencing Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s successful 2021 campaign.

The lawmaker’s comments come as Republicans turn their attention to Virginia ahead of the 2024 elections.

“Joe Biden is so weak and the Democratic Party so disorganized that not only is President Trump winning all of the traditional battleground states, but long-time Democratic states like Minnesota, Virginia and New Jersey are now at stake,” Trump campaign spokesperson Carolyn Leavitt argued in a recent statement to Fox News Digital.

“President Trump is on the offensive with a message of victory and the movement is growing every day. The Joe Biden campaign should be terrified,” she added.

In a recent interview, Youngkin expressed confidence that Virginia would be a key state, saying, “I think Virginia will be a key state. Remember, Joe Biden won Virginia by 10 points in 2020. I ended up winning the next year by 2 points.”

Kaine will face off against Republican candidates for the Senate seat to be chosen by voters in Tuesday’s Republican primary. The front-runners for the nomination are retired Navy Capt. Hung Kao, former DeSantis and Club for Growth staffer Scott Parkinson and constitutional lawyer Jonathan Emold.

Cao is known to have the support of former President Trump.

Another element of this showdown is that Kaine and his opponent will have to run against the party’s presumptive presidential nominee, Biden and Trump.

A recent Fox News poll shocked some by showing Biden and Trump tied in Virginia, with each receiving 48% support, despite Biden winning the 2020 election with 54.11% to Trump’s 44%.
