The designated survivors are high-level Cabinet Offices selected to stay in safe and private locations during an event where the President, Vice President and other senior government officials gather in one place.

The Democrats chose Mike Thompson (D-Calif) to be the designated survivor.

This tradition is done to ensure that the state has someone to lead in the event of a catastrophic event if the leadership of the nation is wiped out. Designated survivors began during the Cold War due to concerns over a nuclear threat.
