Use the timer on your phone
Both iPhone and Android have photo timers built in. Using a timer means you don’t have to ask a stranger to take your picture, which can lead to disaster. My friend handed her phone to someone to take a picture of her and her daughter, but the man ran off with her phone.

For iPhone:
- Open the camera app, Arrow Scroll to the right in the top menu Clock Iconselect a 10 second delay.
- After the countdown, your phone will automatically take 10 photos. Navigate to and tap the photo. select Click “Select a Keeper” at the bottom right.
For Android:
- Open the camera app on your phone timer Turn the power on.
- Select a delay interval (2, 5, or 10 seconds) and it will begin to glow.

A tripod is one of the pro secrets to taking great photos. No more balancing your phone on something and waiting for it to freeze. You don’t need to be a pro to use this trick yourself.

Get a better smile
“Say cheese” is a classic photo prompt, but it can lead to fake smiles. The best way to get everyone smiling is to tell a joke around the 8th second mark of the 10-second timer. My favorite joke is, “I love going commando!”
Otherwise, -ah It’s best to choose a word that sounds good, like “yoga.” It’s best to choose a word that makes the other person laugh or smile.

Organize your photos
Having a family BBQ? You don’t want beer bottles or red plastic cups ruining your photos.
Face Tune (iOS, Android) is a big hit app that everyone is using these days, so much so that if you think your photo has been edited, you’ll be accused of “Facetuned” instead of “Photoshopped.”
If you’re using a Mac, the Photos app has a built-in correction tool.
- Open and select a photo edit > Retouchingadjust Brush Size > Click and drag Place the brush over the object you want to erase.
AI Expert: Chat prompts I wish I’d known about sooner
On PC, you can use the new Generative Erase tool in the Windows Photos app, which uses AI to remove what you don’t like in your photo (that random person in the background) and fill in what you do want (that sunset).

One final tip: genuine smiles and real moments always make for the best photos. Encourage your family to relax, which means not yelling “stay still and smile!”
