Val Chmerkovskiy has expressed his discontent with “Next Pro” contestant AJ Pritchard.
During this week’s episode of “Next Pro,” Chmerkovskiy criticized Pritchard’s “arrogance” backstage, especially towards his partner, Serena Hamilton. He mentioned this to co-host Daniel Fishel, labeling it a “huge setback.” On the podcast “Stepping On Toes,” he remarked, “His sacrifice makes for good television, but I really wish that arrogance could have been presented in a softer way.”
In the second episode, Pritchard and Hamilton showcased a jive routine that was inspired by their victory at the 2015 British Open Dance Championships, which Chmerkovskiy referred to as “the Wimbledon of dancing.”
“Everyone has a pedigree. We’ve all had our wins,” Chmerkovskiy noted, emphasizing that humility is essential for competing. He acknowledged Pritchard’s experience as a competitive dancer, highlighting his time on Strictly Come Dancing from 2016 to 2019.
“There’s a reason you’re here, and not there anymore,” Chmerkovskiy added, urging Pritchard to remain present and not dwell on past accolades.
Chmerkovskiy also mentioned that Pritchard’s method of correcting Hamilton by pushing her hips back was a “huge turnoff.” He pointed out that such behavior might not resonate well with viewers or judges if it continues.
Despite not being a judge on “Next Pro,” Chmerkovskiy is a seasoned pro on “DWTS,” having participated for 20 seasons since Season 13 in 2011, winning the Mirrorball Trophy three times.
In the latest Season 34, he and Alix Earle placed second, while Robert Irwin and Whitney Carson took the top spot.
The winner of “Next Pro” will get the chance to compete professionally in Season 35 of “DWTS.”
