The Valkyries are now just one win away from clinching the WNBA championship.
In Game 5 of the WNBA Finals, the Golden State team secured a 64-55 win against the Dream on Monday night at Chase Center. Fans were ecstatic as the Valkyries defended their home ground and took a 3-2 lead in the series against Atlanta.
Four players from the Valkyries reached double figures in scoring. Center Kiah Stokes contributed 13 points, with eight rebounds and three blocks, shooting an impressive 5-for-6 from the floor. Meanwhile, Veronica Burton also scored 13 points, alongside eight rebounds, four blocks, and three assists.
Tiffany Hayes and Cecilia Zandalasini added 12 points each, helping propel Golden State past the Dream.
The game started slowly, with a combined total of just 47 points by halftime. However, the Valkyries maintained a strong defensive presence throughout both halves.
In only their second season, Golden State has nearly accomplished everything they set out to achieve.
The Valkyries have sold out each home game during the regular season for two years running, and they’ve made playoff appearances in consecutive seasons, which is impressive given they only began their journey last year.
In the playoffs, the Valkyries overcame the defending champions, the Aces, in the semifinals. And now, they are just one victory away from the championship title.
Looking ahead, if the Valkyries secure a win in Game 6 on Thursday, it’s possible that the championship celebration could take place on a practice court. This critical game is set to happen at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, tipping off at 12:30 p.m.
The Hawks have rescheduled their NBA game against the Cavaliers to 8 p.m., but since adjustments will be needed for the court, this might complicate the timing of a celebration if the Valkyries come out on top in Game 6.
