Senator Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat from Maryland, stated on Monday that there seems to be no limit to Republican backing for President Trump, especially concerning the issues of graft and corruption.
“It’s evident that while Republicans may voice some concerns about these matters, their support for the President remains unwavering,” he remarked.
Democrats voiced their objections to the notion of a “gift,” as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) highlighted on Tuesday his criticism of Trump’s halting of financial commitments to candidates.
“This isn’t merely blatant corruption; it also poses a significant national security risk,” Schumer declared during his speech on the Senate floor. “Until the American public is fully informed about this situation, I will work to impede any attempts at politicization within the Department of Justice.”
In response to the controversy, Trump defended the acceptance of gifts, suggesting that rejecting offers would be foolish. “Why would we turn down something free? We need it… especially since our planes are decades old,” he said.
Van Hollen, speaking to CNN, reiterated that the plane’s acceptance constitutes straightforward graft.
“The emoluments clause in our Constitution exists to safeguard against influences that seek to curry favor with the U.S. President,” the Maryland lawmaker emphasized.
Efforts to obtain comments from the White House were made.
