Van Jones: Mamdani experienced a change in character during the victory speech

Zoran Mamdani Elected New York City Mayor Amid Mixed Reactions

New Yorkers have elected leftist candidate Zoran Mamdani as their new mayor, a significant event reported on November 4, 2025. This election day came as important local votes took place nationwide, marking a pivotal moment in Donald Trump’s second term.

In a twist of events, Van Jones commented on Mamdani’s victory speech, suggesting a stark difference in tone compared to the candidate’s behavior throughout his campaign. During his remarks on a CNN live broadcast, Jones noted that Mamdani seemed less approachable during his speech than in previous encounters.

“I didn’t see the engaging, warmer Mamdani we experienced on the campaign trail,” said Jones. “People are trying to gauge whether he will represent their interests. Will he be inclusive, or shift towards a more confrontational stance? His tone tonight felt sharper, almost as if he were shouting, which isn’t the Mamdani we’ve seen on social media or in various interviews.”

Jones stressed that Mamdani might have squandered a chance to unify the city, leaving some residents anxious about whether he has their best interests at heart.

Despite this, Mamdani expressed no regret regarding his Democratic Socialist principles.

Jones reiterated his feelings, explaining, “He missed an opportunity to connect. The softer, more embracing Mamdani we saw during the campaign wasn’t present in that speech,” he remarked in a post-election discussion on CNN.

Nevertheless, Jones acknowledged the challenging path Mamdani navigated to achieve victory in New York City.
