Minnesota Senator Faces Serious Charges Following Violent Shootings
Minnesota Senator Vance Luther Belter, 57, is likely to be charged federally after a significant manhunt concluded with his capture in Sibley County on Sunday night. This incident has been characterized as perhaps the largest manhunt in the state’s history.
On Monday, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced plans to file first-degree murder charges against Belter. He is accused of the tragic killings of Minnesota Senator Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, which occurred early Saturday at their home in Brooklyn Park, Minneapolis.
Belter is also alleged to have shot Democratic Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, at a nearby residence in what seems to be a related incident.
He faces two murder counts for the deaths of Melissa and Mark Hortman and two counts of attempted second-degree murder for the shooting of John and Yvette Hoffman.
According to Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty, the charges could be formalized through complaints as early as Sunday, allowing Belter to be detained promptly as the investigation continued.
The severity of these charges is underscored by the fact that they are felonies, each carrying a potential maximum sentence of 40 years, with a minimum mandatory sentence of three years for the use of a firearm.
Authorities shared that Belter identified himself verbally while he was being searched in the area on Sunday evening. The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office referred to him as “the face of evil” in a Facebook post and praised the collaborative efforts of various agencies and the community in bringing him into custody.
Documents revealed disturbing details about Belter’s possessions. In his vehicle, officers found a list that included three AK-47 rifles, a 9mm handgun, and names and addresses of various civil servants.
Belter’s bail was set at an astonishing $5 million—a reflection, perhaps, of the seriousness of his actions.
In a planned attack, authorities stated, the suspect specifically targeted lawmakers, arriving at their homes dressed in police-like uniforms and masks.
Senator Amy Klobuchar shared a message from Yvette Hoffman on Sunday. It detailed the harrowing condition of her husband, who was shot multiple times: “John is currently enduring many surgeries and is getting closer every hour to get out of the woods,” Yvette mentioned, noting that while they are grateful to be alive, the loss of Melissa and Mark weighs heavily on them. “There is never a place for this kind of political hatred,” she stated.
