Vance Boelter admits guilt after the murder of a Minnesota lawmaker and her spouse.

Vance Boulter unexpectedly pleaded guilty in federal court, admitting to the assassination of Minnesota Democratic Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, last year.

According to an announcement from the Department of Justice, Boulter pled guilty to several charges. These charges include the stalking and murder of the Hortmans, as well as the stalking and shooting of state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, plus the attempted shooting of their daughter, Hope.

On June 14, 2025, Boulter fatally shot Melissa and Mark Hortman in their Brooklyn Park home. This incident took place just over an hour after he shot and severely injured the Hoffman couple at their residence near Champlin.

“Court documents suggest that Boulter intended to kill, injure, harass, and intimidate his victims, causing them to reasonably fear for their lives,” the Justice Department reported. “Melissa and Mark Hortman were killed, while John and Yvette Hoffman suffered life-threatening injuries.”

Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson commented, “Boulter’s change of plea is a significant step towards accountability for the harm inflicted on our community. This outcome underscores the collaborative efforts of various law enforcement agencies, though it can’t erase the suffering of the Hortman and Hoffman families.”

As a consequence, Boulter faces two life sentences along with an additional 40 years in prison. Prosecutors have opted not to seek the death penalty, a decision confirmed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

“The Attorney General has directed the government to refrain from pursuing the death penalty against Vance Luther Boulter as per the plea agreement,” according to a court filing.

Boulter also faces state charges, which include two counts of first-degree premeditated murder, four counts of attempted first-degree murder, animal cruelty, and impersonating a police officer.

Reports suggest that Boulter arrived at the Hoffman residence armed and disguised as a police officer, wearing tactical gear and a silicone mask.

The Hoffman family has filed a civil lawsuit accusing Boulter of assault, battery, and intentionally causing emotional distress. John and Yvette Hoffman were hospitalized for about six weeks due to their injuries, and their daughter, Hope, who was present during the attack and called for help, faced suspension from school because of emotional distress.

The Hoffmans stated, “There will be no justice for Mark and Melissa Hortman. While the legal proceedings may bring some accountability, real healing needs more from all of us. Our decisions aim to serve the public and support our communities… This plea brings us closer to justice, but we remain dedicated to honoring the victims and ensuring accountability through the law.”
