Life Sentence for Minnesota Man in High-Profile Murders
A man from Minnesota, who admitted to killing a well-known Democratic lawmaker and her spouse, was sentenced on Thursday to life imprisonment. This sentence comes over a year after the violent incidents that shook the community.
Vance Boulter, age 59, received two consecutive life sentences along with an additional 40 years in prison. His guilty plea in June addressed six charges linked to the murders of House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, as well as the fatal shooting of state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.
During the sentencing hearing, fellow lawmakers and survivors shared their experiences, highlighting the ongoing fear and physical trauma that Boulter inflicted.
Boulter chose to plead guilty to avoid receiving the death penalty, accepting the maximum punishment available short of that. However, Mark Hortman’s family expressed their anger and disappointment over his reprieve from capital punishment.
Sitting still in an orange prison uniform, with his legs restrained, Boulter avoided making eye contact with those affected while they delivered victim impact statements.
Survivors Reflect on the Trauma
Senator Hoffman spoke in court about how the brutal violence from that night continues to haunt him and his family. He mentioned that the trauma has disrupted their everyday routines, like no longer receiving mail at their home and installing a fortified steel door.
“The defendant locked eyes with me and pulled the trigger. He also aimed at my wife,” Hoffman shared. “We are now living with our injuries and the haunting sound of gunfire.”
Yvette Hoffman, deeply affected by the attack, has struggled to return to work and attends therapy sessions every week to cope.
“I fought him with everything I had. I felt myself sinking, seeing my blood drip into the white washing machine,” she recounted tearfully. “We have an escape plan in place. This isn’t how people should live their lives.”
Boulter confessed in June that he spent months stalking his victims before heading to their homes under the pretense of being a police officer, intending to kill them. His actions led to the largest police manhunt in the history of the state.
Another Democratic Representative, Christine Berner, narrowly avoided the attack as her family was on vacation that evening. She expressed her confusion and guilt over surviving while Hortman did not, saying that, “In my heart, she guides me.”
Family Outrage Over Sentence
Family members of Mark Hortman voiced their indignation not only at Boulter but also towards the justice system. Mark’s sister criticized the notion of Boulter receiving basic care funded by taxpayer dollars.
Melissa Hortman’s family reminisced about her as a loving parent and grandparent, emphasizing the profound loss felt by those she touched throughout her life.
“The harm done to our family and society is unfathomable,” stated Harold Halptzog, Melissa’s father. He referred to Melissa affectionately as a “little girl” and expressed regret that Boulter hadn’t taken the time to discuss his political beliefs with her instead of resorting to violence.
Details of the Attack
According to court records, Boulter arrived at the Hortman residence around 3:30 a.m. on June 14, 2025, dressed in tactical gear and a mask. He claimed to be a police officer conducting a welfare check.
When Mark Hortman opened the door, Boulter provided a false identity and demanded that Melissa also come to the door. He shot Mark multiple times, then entered the home and killed a deputy who was attempting to escape upstairs. Both Mark and Melissa were murdered.
Earlier that night, Boulter had attacked the Hoffmans, injuring the senator and his wife. He also attempted to approach two other deputies but was deterred when one police officer arrived at the scene. Additionally, Boulter faces various state charges, including murder and animal cruelty, as the Hortman family’s dog was also severely harmed during the incident.
