Vance calls on Biden to resign: 'If you can't run, you can't serve'

Republican vice presidential nominee Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio called on President Biden to resign, amid growing calls from within his own Democratic Party for him to do so.

“If you can’t run, you can’t serve,” he said. Posts X Saturday morning. “He should resign immediately.”

His comments came after 12 Democrats on Friday alone called on Biden to withdraw from the presidential race. As of Saturday, 35 Democrats had called on Biden to do so, mainly over concerns about whether he can beat former President Trump in the fall.

The list includes a relatively broad sample of the caucus, including Democrats in tough reelection battles like Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and those in uncontested races like Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), but just as many have issued statements endorsing Biden as the nominee and calling for party unity.

Vance criticized Democrats who have called for Biden to step down, pointing out the contradiction of wanting to remove Biden from the running while still believing he is capable of doing his job.

“Anyone who calls on Joe Biden to end his candidacy without calling on him to step down from office is engaging in an enormous level of cynicism,” he wrote.

On Saturday, Vance campaigned for the first time as Trump’s running mate in Grand Rapids, Michigan, one of several key battleground states that President Biden won in the 2020 presidential election and helped seal the Democratic victory.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment by press time.
