Vice President JD Vance Critiques Governor Gavin Newsom
Vice President JD Vance has voiced sharp criticism against California Governor Gavin Newsom, suggesting that recent attempts by Newsom to emulate former President Donald Trump are misguided. Vance stated, “You can’t imitate a master. You should just go, and people want it to be more than a cheap imitation of the US president.”
This reaction follows a viral series of posts from Newsom’s Press Office on X, which seemed to mirror Trump’s distinctive social media style. Notably, Newsom’s messages featured all-caps phrases that appeared to target Trump and incorporated playful sign-offs mimicking the former president.
In a tongue-in-cheek comment, Newsom teased that “Trump Corruption Coins” would be available in online stores, claiming that “tomorrow’s history is being made.” He jokingly mentioned the “beautiful maps of California,” asserting that they are “the best maps ever created.”
Some analysts believe Newsom’s approach could resonate with Democratic voters. According to a recent survey, his support among Democrats and independent voters reportedly increased by eight points from June to the end of August.
However, Vance questioned the authenticity of Newsom’s tactics, remarking, “If you look at Gavin Newsom trying to act like Donald Trump, that’s the opposite of authenticity. He’s not trying to become Gavin Newsom. And that doesn’t work.”
Vance also commented on Democratic mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani, expressing uncertainty about him but suggesting that Mamdani appears to be enjoying a comfortable life in the US. Vance remarked, “Instead of attacking the US and all of its problems, I can show my gratitude.”
Emphasizing Trump’s role in shaping contemporary politics, Vance advised Democrats to take heed. He stressed, “The lesson of President Trump in American politics is that you need to be authentic to yourself.” He added that, “Democrats need to learn to laugh at themselves a little bit. They don’t have to be that serious. Sometimes it’s actually good to have a sense of humor about our political process.”
Looking back at his late grandmother, affectionately called “Mummer,” Vance reflected on how disconnected she would feel from today’s Democratic values. “I think Mummer would say, ‘This is crazy,'” he said, noting that modern Democrats don’t seem to represent her at all.
