During a visit to North Carolina on Wednesday, JD Vance commented on President Trump’s remarks, suggesting they were meant to be humorous. This took place at a memorial for conservative figure Charlie Kirk.
“It’s an interesting point,” Vance noted, referring to Trump’s attempts to highlight the challenges of forgiving one’s enemies in a lighthearted way.
Trump, reflecting on Charlie Kirk, mentioned he was someone who “doesn’t hate his enemies.” He added, “He wanted the best for them. That’s where I differ from Charlie. I hate my enemies; I don’t want the best for them. Sorry.”
The former president also remarked on Kirk’s discussions about the “left,” preferring descriptors like “radical left” or “radical left madman.” Vance commented on this dichotomy, saying, “It’s tough when people attack, criticize, or even resort to violence against you. That makes forgiveness really hard.” He interpreted Trump’s words as emphasizing the genuine struggles involved in forgiveness, rather than promoting hatred towards enemies.
Additionally, the president’s remarks contrasted with those of others at the event, including Erica Kirk, Charlie’s widow, who spoke movingly, causing visible emotion in the audience.
Vance praised Erica’s comments as a “remarkable demonstration of Christian forgiveness.” Meanwhile, plans were announced for further discussions in North Carolina, including a focus on tax cuts and law enforcement topics related to the Trump administration.
