MSNBC host Joe Scarborough said on “Morning Joe” Monday that former President Trump’s choice of Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate was “one of the dumbest choices in history.”
“I’ve never really had a good answer for this question myself. I can understand most, if not all, politics to some degree. But this selection of J.D. Vance, I’ve never been able to understand it at all. I just think it’s one of the dumbest selections of all time,” Scarborough said.
He continued, “It adds nothing. It just highlights his weaknesses. His weaknesses on abortion, on women’s issues. This is not a small issue. If you look back at the voting patterns over the last couple of years, this is arguably the biggest political earthquake since Proposition 13 passed in California in 1978. It changed the face of American politics. Why elect someone who balks in that area?”
“Donald Trump has been thinking for a long time about picking a safer interim candidate, so that’s why we have very safe people like Doug Burgum and Marco Rubio,” said panelist John Heilemann.
He added: “From all the reports we’ve seen, it appears that Trump made the decision at the last minute, beginning to lean towards a legacy selection in the month or so before the Republican National Convention, but only made the decision after the assassination attempt, at which point there was a view within the Trump camp that he was headed for a landslide victory.”
