Vice President’s Advice to Olympians
Vice President J.D. Vance recently offered some thoughts for U.S. Olympians who have voiced opinions on the Trump administration during the Milan-Cortina Games. While attending various sporting events in Italy, Vance mentioned hearing boos directed towards him, and he spoke to reporters in Baku, Azerbaijan, urging American athletes to focus on unifying the nation rather than sowing further division.
“The Olympians were incredible, and the entire country is rooting for them,” Vance stated. He pointed out that some athletes inevitably engage in politics at the Olympics, which isn’t new. His advice to them? Aim to unite, not divide. “When you represent the country, you embody both political parties. You’re there to play a sport, to represent your nation and hopefully earn a medal—not to delve into politics.”
Vance acknowledged that political comments from Olympians can attract backlash. Still, he expressed confidence that, regardless of their political views, most athletes command support from the nation. He suggested that dividing the country from a foreign venue, especially by criticizing the president, doesn’t help foster unity.
Before the Games commenced last week, several Olympic athletes threw shade on the Trump administration. Skiers Hunter Hess and Chris Lillis, along with figure skater Amber Glenn, were among them. Their remarks incited considerable backlash on social media. Trump even labeled Hess a “real loser” for his comments.
Despite the political drama, it seems the U.S. has excelled at the Winter Olympics, remaining the top performer overall. It’s a complex landscape, but the focus on sports and national pride continues amid the chaos.
