On a flight back from Rome, Vice President Vance spoke to reporters about former President Biden’s recent cancer diagnosis, which he said shouldn’t overshadow discussions about Biden’s fitness for the presidency.
“Whether it’s the right moment to discuss this now or later, we have to confront the question of whether the former president can perform his duties,” Vance remarked.
He indicated that his concerns extend beyond just politics and policy matters.
“It’s important to distinguish between whether he’s receiving proper medical care and his capacity to serve the American people effectively,” Vance stated.
Biden, who served as vice president under Barack Obama for eight years, revealed through a family spokesperson on Sunday that he has been diagnosed with an aggressive stage of prostate cancer that has progressed to his bones.
The story gained traction largely due to audio from a 2023 interview involving Robert Herr, a special advisor tasked with managing classified documents during Biden’s time away, amidst ongoing concerns regarding the former president’s mental acuity.
Former President Trump, one of the more prominent figures to express doubt about Biden’s health, wished him a “fast and successful recovery” in a post on social media on Sunday.
Vance expressed skepticism about the availability of accurate images reflecting Biden’s current health situation.
“Why hasn’t the public been provided with clearer details about what he’s facing? This is a serious matter,” he argued. “This is the individual who oversees the nuclear football for the largest nuclear power in the world. It’s not a trivial issue; while it’s fine to wish for good health, there’s a point where one must acknowledge the ability to perform one’s job effectively.”
