Vice President-elect J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) announced Thursday that he will resign from his Senate seat early Friday.
Vance on Thursday sent his resignation to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) for the next four years in the White House.
“As I prepare to assume the role of Vice President of the United States, I would like to express that it has been an honor and privilege to serve the people of Ohio in the Senate for the past two years,” Vance wrote in his book. said. Letter to DeWine.
Mr. DeWine will replace Mr. Vance, who served only two years of a six-year term in the Senate. The appointed senator will serve in Vance's seat until a special election is held in 2026. Another election will then be held in 2028.
Vance issued a separate statement Thursday, thanking Ohioans for the “privilege of serving in the United States Senate.”
“When I was elected to this office, I made a promise to never forget where I came from, and I have tried to live up to that promise every day,” he continued.
“The American people have given President Trump an undeniable mandate to put America first at home and abroad. Over the next four years, I will do everything in my power to help President Trump enact policy. We will make America stronger, safer, and more prosperous than ever before.”
Vance and President-elect Trump will take office on January 20, 2025.
