Vance and Trump Discuss Senate Strategy for SAVE America Act

In a recent interview, Vice President JD Vance shared that he and former President Trump have strategized on a plan to gain control of the Senate floor to facilitate the passage of the SAVE America Act. This insight was revealed during an interview with Vince Coglianese.

The SAVE America Act is aimed at ensuring that only U.S. citizens have a say in American elections. It proposes measures such as mandatory identification before voters can register for federal elections, proof of citizenship, and restrictions on mail-in ballots, with exceptions pertaining to illness, disabilities, military duty, or travel.

This act has been a crucial focus for President Trump, who has seen it stalled in the Senate due to unified opposition from Democrats and a handful of Republicans.

During the discussion, Vance noted that one scenario they have considered involves his authority to take over as chair and potentially dismiss the Senate parliamentarian. Although he believes he has that power, he also mentioned that “four, five, maybe ten” Republicans might side with Democrats to counteract the new chair.

According to Vance, the issue isn’t solely a matter of who holds the chair but rather a segment of Republican senators who tend to vote with Democrats more than their own party. He asserted that if all 50 Republican senators and the vice president united, they could remove the parliamentarian, abolish the filibuster, pass the SAVE America Act, and more.

Vance stressed that the challenge lies not in the leadership position but in a few Republicans who opt to align with the Democrats. He expressed that they had meticulously explored every detail of their strategy and had initially considered acting on it months earlier but ultimately felt it wouldn’t lead anywhere.

He went on to explain that he and Trump have been deeply invested in figuring out how to ensure the SAVE America Act gets passed and specifically identified four Republican senators—Mitch McConnell (R-KY), John Cornyn (R-TX), Thom Tillis (R-NC), and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)—who would likely side with Democrats to oppose the legislation.

“Our focus is on winning the battle, which involves replacing lackluster Republican senators with more effective ones,” Vance added.

Over the summer, Vance highlighted on social media that election integrity transcends party lines—it’s fundamentally an American issue. He called for unity to pass the SAVE America Act, emphasizing the need to protect every citizen’s right to vote in a fair election.

In a previous discussion with Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), he remarked that Democrats are the ones blocking the progress on this issue. Johnson stated that while Republicans are generally united in supporting election integrity and voter ID, they lack the necessary votes to overcome a filibuster.

Another Republican, Mike Lee from Utah, expressed his frustration over the Senate’s frequent recesses, viewing them as wasted opportunities. He noted that despite assurances to address the SAVE America Act, significant time had already elapsed without any progress.
