Vance Advocates for Peace Ahead of Trump-Putin Meeting
On Sunday, Vice President Vance expressed his desire for peace, indicating a shift in funding for the Ukrainian conflict as discussions for a ceasefire intensify ahead of a meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin scheduled for Friday in Alaska.
“We’ve concluded funding the Ukrainian War initiative, and our goal is to achieve a peaceful reconciliation,” Vance shared during an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures.
The Trump administration hopes to make significant progress on peace talks with Moscow and issues related to territorial claims during the Alaska summit.
Earlier in the week, the Kremlin put forward a proposal involving territorial agreements with the Trump administration, looking to gain control over Eastern Ukraine in exchange for a cessation of hostilities.
Ukrainian President Voldy Mee Zelensky has strongly opposed the proposed deal, asserting, “Ukraine is prepared for a legitimate decision that can pave the way for peace. A decision that excludes us is essentially a decision against peace.”
Although not invited to the summit, Zelensky has had discussions with the White House and NATO Ambassador Matthew Whitaker, who suggested that a trilateral meeting could still occur.
This proposed agreement has sparked significant backlash from European leaders. While they support Trump’s diplomatic and military efforts, they insist that any resolution must safeguard the critical security interests of both Ukraine and Europe.
During the presidential campaign, Trump promised to resolve the conflict within 24 hours, but negotiations have turned out to be more complex than anticipated, with the ongoing three-year war proving costly for both the United States and Europe.
Vance remarked, “I think Americans are growing weary of continually funding this conflict. However, if European nations are interested in purchasing arms from American suppliers, that’s acceptable, but they can’t rely solely on U.S. funding any longer.”
This isn’t the first occasion Vance has urged European leaders to take on a more prominent role. Back in June, Trump achieved a landmark agreement committing NATO allies to allocate 5% of their GDP towards defense.
In July, the president signed another agreement with NATO regarding the provision of lethal weapons to Ukraine funded by NATO allies, which notably increased Europe’s financial involvement in the ongoing conflict.
Vance traveled to England on Saturday to further discuss Trump’s peace initiatives.
“What we conveyed to European leaders is that this situation is in your backyard. You need to rise to the occasion and contribute more significantly. If you truly care about this conflict, you should be prepared to engage in a more direct and meaningful manner,” Vance stated during his Fox News interview.
