VA’s Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears Files to Run for Governor

Virginia's Lieutenant Governor, Winsome Earl Sears, a conservative Republican, plans to run for governor in 2025.

Governor Glenn Youngkin is not running because Virginia governors are limited to one term.

According to state elections department documents, Earl Sears filed a statement of organization on Wednesday. Reported On Thursday.

She is scheduled to make the announcement at a rally in Virginia Beach on Thursday night.

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Winsome Earl Sears immigrated to the United States at the age of 6. She is proud to have served in the U.S. Marine Corps and, among other positions, has served as Vice Chair of the Virginia State Board of Education, a Presidential Appointee to the U.S. Census Bureau, Co-Chair of the African American Committee, and a member of the Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary's Advisory Committee on Women Veterans.

Winsome was first elected to a majority-black House of Delegates in 2002, the first time a Republican had been elected to that position in Virginia since 1865. She is Virginia's first female Lieutenant Governor, the first black woman elected to statewide office, the first naturalized woman elected to statewide office, and the first female military veteran elected to statewide office.

According to Breitbart News, at a campaign event for Karina Lipsman and Jim Miles, Republican candidates challenging Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) and Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) in 2022, Sears harshly criticized Democratic ideology and the administration of President Joe Biden (D).

“They will continue not to prosecute people who should be prosecuted. They will continue their no bail policy. They will continue all of these things that we abhor,” she said.

“They will continue to separate us from our children. Parents! We are not going to turn our children over to the government. Not in this lifetime. They are our children, we are their first teachers and we are going to raise them!” Earl Sears added.
