Angels Secure Win with Grissom’s Unique Play

The Los Angeles Angels celebrated a notable 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Angel Stadium on Tuesday. One moment that stood out during the game involved Angels’ third baseman Vaughn Grissom, who, surprisingly, incorporated a basketball-style move into his play.

In the third inning, with a runner on first, Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera hit a grounder to Grissom. After fielding the ball cleanly, Grissom tossed it to second base to initiate a double play. However, he had to adjust his throw; the sun was directly in second baseman Oswaldo Peraza’s eyes. So rather than making a conventional throw, Grissom opted for something less typical—he bounced the ball into the dirt between them. This clever maneuver allowed Peraza to catch the ball more easily and avoid the glare.

Peraza then swiftly turned and threw to first baseman Nolan Chanuel, successfully completing the double play. That specific play highlighted the team’s synergy, even as they showcased strong pitching and defense throughout the game.

The Angels, led by starting pitcher Wolbert Ureña, performed commendably, with Ureña allowing only one run over six innings while striking out five batters. His stellar performance brought his ERA down to 2.78.

Offensively, the Angels made their mark early, hitting hard in the first inning with five of their ten hits. Designated hitter Jorge Soler kicked things off with a two-run double, followed by Grissom’s line drive, and right fielder Joe Adell capped the first inning with a two-run homer, contributing to the team’s five-run surge.

This win marked the Angels’ fourth consecutive victory—an impressive streak for the season, especially as the Cardinals have faced challenges, losing 10 out of their last 14 games. With a record of 41-61, the Angels are looking to expand their winning streak in the next game against the Cardinals (51-49), set for Wednesday at 4:07 p.m. ET.
