VCU shocks UNC with a 19-point comeback victory in overtime during the NCAA Tournament

VCU Pulls Off Stunning Comeback Against UNC

In a thrilling finish during overtime, Terrence Hill Jr. hit a crucial 3-pointer with just 15 seconds left on the clock. His teammates and coaches all held their breath, hoping that their comeback would pay off. And it did. The VCU Rams, ranked 11th, managed to overcome a daunting 19-point deficit to defeat the 6th-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels with a final score of 82-78 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

North Carolina had a significant lead of 19 points with 15 minutes remaining in the game but seemed to falter as the match progressed in Greenville, South Carolina. They controlled the game’s tempo for much of the second half but couldn’t maintain their grip.

As the seconds ticked down, missed free throws from the Tar Heels opened the door for VCU, allowing Hill to tie the game at 75 with a layup. In an attempt to close the game, UNC’s Seth Trimble had a chance to clinch the win with a last-second 3-pointer, but the shot didn’t reach the rim, leaving both teams scrambling.

In overtime, VCU didn’t score initially, but Nick Lewis broke the ice with a tough layup, giving them a narrow 77-75 lead. Trimble attempted to respond and was fouled but only made one of his two free throws, which left VCU with an opportunity to take the lead.

Hill was a standout, scoring 34 points on 13-of-23 shooting, including a remarkable 7-of-10 from beyond the arc. Yet, the game wasn’t sealed just yet. Henri Vissard was sent to the line for two free throws, but he missed the first attempt while the clock wound down. When it hit zero, heads hung low for the Tar Heels.

This win marked VCU’s first NCAA Tournament victory since 2016, showcasing a strong second half where they managed a shooting percentage of 62%, including an impressive 7-of-10 from three-point range.

Overall, it was a day of unexpected twists in March Madness, with VCU’s remarkable comeback stealing the spotlight after earlier surprises, like High Point’s upset over Wisconsin.
