Chaos erupted outside the RCDE Stadium during the LaLiga match between Barcelona and Espanyol when a car, surrounded by Espanyol fans, accelerated into a crowd. The vehicle struck about 20 individuals, leading to three serious injuries and another 11 with minor injuries, as the driver reportedly panicked.
Catalan police apprehended a woman related to the incident and declared the situation “under control.” Reports indicated that video footage shared on social media captured disturbing moments of the incident, revealing confusion regarding the exact details.
Some sources mentioned that the driver unintentionally injured a young girl, prompting the crowd to react by throwing objects at the car, which resulted in a broken window.
Further reports highlighted that the driver, likely between 45 and 55 years old, panicked, hit the accelerator, and plowed through the crowd, causing chaos as people were thrown aside. Authorities are depicted managing the scene while some fans continued to express their anger, hurling objects at the vehicle.
Footage also showed a woman being assisted away from the scene, visibly injured. Officials had a handcuffed individual near the car as they tried to restore order.
Salvador Ira, president of the Catalan government, described the event as an accident, noting that while injuries occurred, they were not critical and reassured that there were no major incidents to report during an interview with a Spanish TV channel.
Despite the disruption, the match resumed after an eight-minute delay. Authorities assured spectators that the situation was managed and emphasized that there were no serious injuries reported. Barcelona ultimately triumphed over Espanyol, clinching the LaLiga title.
