Protests Erupt Over Bezos and Sanchez’s Wedding in Venice

While Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos’ upcoming wedding in Venice, Italy, is poised to be one of the year’s most extravagant events, not everyone is exactly excited about it. Last week, locals gathered to voice their concerns, fearing the celebratory chaos might exacerbate the ongoing issues caused by increased tourism in their beloved city.

One sign displayed during the protests read, “There is no space for Bezos.”

Local Opposition to the Celebration

Details about the wedding remain largely confidential, yet one Venetian wryly mentioned, “We have a mole,” hinting at insider information. Federica Toninello, one of the protest organizers, suggested one of the venues could be the Misericordia event hall. During the protest, she passionately declared, “Bezos will never reach Misericordia. We’ll block the streets with our bodies and the canals with our lifesavers, dinghies, and boats.” It’s a strong sentiment, reflecting local frustration.

Toninello continued, “We have to resist Bezos. This city shouldn’t be treated like just another tourist spot.” She articulated concerns that rising tourism costs have significantly affected local housing, making it increasingly difficult for ordinary Venetians to live there.

Despite the visible discontent, Mayor Luigi Burgnaro conveyed to the Associated Press that the city feels “very proud” to host the couple. “I don’t know if I’ll have the chance to meet Bezos and Sanchez, but it’s an honor that they chose Venice,” he remarked, suggesting that the city is a global stage.

Tourism and Local Identity at Stake

According to reports, Venice, with its permanent population of around 50,000, attracts an impressive 20 million visitors each year. Most of these tourists arrive via day trips from nearby cruise ships and cities. Officials mentioned that out of 280 available water taxis, only about 30 have been reserved for the wedding, with a handful of hotels booked for the occasion.

Moreover, city officials insist they have the experience needed to manage significant events like celebrity weddings and international summits, stating, “The 250 guests will seamlessly integrate into the city’s daily rhythm.” They maintained that the quality of life for locals, along with their dignity and respect for tourists, should be preserved.

Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos

Interestingly, despite the protests, a city hall statement emphasized that such opposition doesn’t represent the prevailing sentiments of the Venetians, many of whom appreciate that Venice has been chosen as the wedding venue. Apparently, Bezos and Sanchez are committed to sourcing about 80% of their wedding vendors locally, aiming to lessen the impact on residents.

In March, city officials reassured residents that the wedding wouldn’t disrupt daily life. Burgnaro noted that there’s close collaboration with the event organizers to make sure the city’s unique character is respected. They insisted that recent rumors and misinformation surrounding the wedding were exaggerated, asserting that normal city operations would not face any extraordinary disturbances.

A Star-Studded Affair on the Horizon

The wedding, reportedly happening later this month, is expected to attract quite the crowd. Celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Oprah Winfrey, and more are said to be on the guest list. Bezos and Sanchez first became public in 2019 after both had ended previous relationships.

Bezos proposed to Sanchez in May 2023 while aboard a lavish yacht, boasting a 30-carat engagement ring, estimated to be valued at $3 to $5 million. According to reports, they’ve held multiple engagement parties, one in Beverly Hills, another in Positano, Italy. As the date approaches, it remains to be seen how both the wedding and the protests will unfold in the backdrop of this picturesque, yet challenged, city.
