Venezuelan Opposition Leader Wins Nobel Peace Prize

On Friday, a Venezuelan opposition figure was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize due to his ongoing resistance against the regime of Nicolás Maduro.

María Colina Machado, 58, who is an industrial engineer, has been in hiding since 2024. This was after Maduro’s supporters claimed he had been re-elected, even with significant allegations of fraud surrounding the election.

Upon receiving the award, Machado surprised many by dedicating her recognition to former President Donald Trump, acknowledging his steadfast support for their cause.

“Acknowledging the fight of all Venezuelans is crucial for us to achieve our goal of freedom,” Machado stated in a social media message.

She went on to express optimism, stating, “We are on the brink of victory. Today, more than ever, we turn to President Trump, the American people, and the democracies around the globe as vital allies in our quest for freedom and democracy.”

In her remarks, Machado expressed, “I dedicate this award to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his unwavering support of our cause!”

Machado, who is married to a constitutional lawyer and is a mother of three, has faced serious accusations from the government, labeling her a fascist and a terrorist for opposing their communist initiatives.

“She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in acknowledgment of her relentless commitment to promote the democratic rights of the Venezuelan populace and her efforts toward a peaceful and fair transition from dictatorship to democracy,” remarked Jørgen Watne Fridnes, Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Trump has been vocal about his hopes for the Nobel Peace Prize, asserting that he has facilitated numerous national conflicts during his presidency.

“They will never give me the Nobel Peace Prize. It’s quite disappointing; I deserve it, but somehow it will never come my way,” the president lamented during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Some critics suggest that the prestige of the award has been undermined, particularly after it was granted to former President Barack Obama with what they perceive as little justification.

Interestingly, in addition to Obama, three other U.S. presidents have also received the Nobel Peace Prize.
