Venezuelan Asylum Seeker Arrested for Smuggling Migrants

Sheriff's deputies in West Texas arrested a Venezuelan asylum seeker last week for allegedly smuggling a group of migrants into the U.S. interior. The migrants were part of a wave of arrests in Terrell County, Texas, during the final days of the Biden administration.

Terrell County Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland posted a photo of a deputy arresting a Venezuelan asylum seeker released to the United States under one of President Joe Biden's executive immigration programs. These programs have resulted in record-breaking immigrant encounters over the past four years.

Deputies were working overtime to patrol highways in far west Texas under Gov. Greg Abbott's “Operation Lone Star” and the federal government's “Operation Stone Garden” program. Sheriff Cleveland told Breitbart Texas that there was no indication that the Venezuelan immigrant belonged to the Torren de Aragua prison gang.

Two days later, deputies worked with the Texas Department of Military Affairs and Border Patrol agents at Sanderson Station to apprehend more migrants attempting to evade arrest.

Deputies and Officer Sanderson arrested seven more immigrants from the Mexican state of Guerrero later that day.

Cleveland Sheriff's Office posted more photos Wednesday of deputies assisting two more immigrant groups in Terrell County.

The second group included seven Mexicans from the state of Hidalgo.

Note that many immigrants wear camouflage clothing to avoid detection as they seek refuge in the interior of the United States.

Terrell County is located in the Border Patrol's Big Bend District. In December, Big Bend Sector officials arrested 503 migrants. This is up from 282 cases in November, making it the sector's busiest month in almost a year.

Since October 1, 2021, Big Bend Sector personnel have encountered nearly 50,000 immigrants, according to CBP's National Encounter Report. Statistics for FY21 were not available at the time of writing.
