Venezuelan Opposition Leader Reacts to Maduro’s Arrest

María Colina Machado, a prominent figure in Venezuela’s opposition, proclaimed January 3 as “the day when justice triumphed over tyranny” after the recent arrest of Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces.

The Trump administration stated that U.S. military operations successfully captured Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a substantial offensive targeting significant figures in the regime. Both are being detained in New York on charges related to narco-terrorism.

During an appearance on “Hannity,” Machado remarked, “This date will be significant for our history. It represents a major advancement, not just for the Venezuelan populace but for the ideals of freedom and human dignity across the globe.”

She described the development as a “historic victory” that could pave the way for Venezuela’s democratic future. Machado emphasized the need for a collaborative effort to dismantle criminal enterprises in the Americas and transform Venezuela into an energy powerhouse that fosters the rule of law and attracts foreign investment.

Reflecting on her aspirations, she mentioned, “We aim to bring back the millions who have fled and to build a strong and open society, moving away from this damaging regime.”

Machado’s struggle against Maduro isn’t new; she had previously run against him, winning a primary but was barred from further participation by the government. Meanwhile, Edmundo González filled in for her in the elections.

“It was seen as impossible to hold an independent election, yet we managed to unite the citizens and engage millions in the process,” Machado recounted. “Maduro feared us, but despite facing immense challenges, we brought people together.”

Her commitment has not gone unnoticed; she received the Nobel Peace Prize, which she dedicated to President Trump, believing he “deserved” recognition for his actions.

“I think he demonstrated his capability,” Machado reflected on January 3. “It was surprising to many that he achieved what he did. I felt dedicating the award to him was fitting.”

Looking toward the future, Machado expressed appreciation for the moves made by the Trump administration against what she described as a narco-terrorist regime, emphasizing the new hope for her country’s liberation and a potentially safer United States.
