Violence Erupts in Minneapolis During ICE Action
On January 14, 2026, in north Minneapolis, a tense situation unfolded involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and a Venezuelan man. Following an attempted arrest, the man, identified as Sosascelis, crashed his vehicle into a parked car, then fled on foot. In the ensuing chaos, he allegedly attacked federal agents with shovels and broomsticks, resulting in a violent confrontation where he was shot in the leg by an ICE officer. Thankfully, his injuries were not life-threatening.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stated that the ICE officer acted in self-defense during what they described as an ambush, as other individuals joined in the attack. Reports mention that three suspects—Julio Cesar Sosa-Celiz, Alfredo Alejandro Ajorna, and Gabriel Alejandro Hernández-Rezema—were later arrested. All are Venezuelan nationals who had entered the U.S. under the Biden administration and are currently residing in the country illegally.
Sosascelis had a history with law enforcement, having been previously arrested for driving without a license and giving false information to an officer. However, he was released by Minnesota officials before ICE could detain him. Ajorna and Hernández-Rezema, who entered the U.S. in May 2023, had faced their own immigration challenges; Ajorna missed a court hearing and was subsequently ordered for deportation, while Hernández-Rezema had been marked as “non-enforceable.”
That same night, Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis urged demonstrators to disperse, claiming they were exacerbating the situation. He emphasized the need for the crowd to refrain from escalating tensions. In his remarks, he pointed out that countering chaos with more chaos doesn’t help anyone, particularly not those in the immigrant community.
In light of the incident, protests followed, with some demonstrators reportedly engaging in unruly behavior—throwing fireworks and snowballs at police. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated that their presence was an “unlawful gathering” and called for the crowd to leave immediately to prevent further escalation.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin criticized both Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Frey for their outspoken resistance against ICE, claiming that such rhetoric contributes to a rising rate of assaults against federal agents, which have reportedly surged by 1,300%. The tension in the air remains palpable as proponents and opponents of immigration enforcement grapple with the consequences of these escalating confrontations.
