Venice Bans Greta Thunberg for 48 Hours
Venice has imposed a temporary ban on Greta Thunberg, the Swedish climate activist, for 48 hours after she participated in an action that involved pouring green dye into the Grand Canal. This incident occurred as Thunberg joined a protest by Extinction Rebellion, which included various stunts in Belém, Brazil, coinciding with the conclusion of the COP30 climate conference.
During the demonstration, protesters introduced an “environmentally harmless” green dye into the canal’s waters while displaying a banner proclaiming “Stop Ecocide” from the Rialto Bridge. Others in the protest wore red veils that obscured their faces as they marched through the city, aiming to highlight the severe impacts of climate change.
Thunberg and the other protesters faced a fine of around $172 and were subjected to a brief lockdown. The group mentioned that they had executed similar protests in various Italian cities, including Turin and Brogna, effectively polluting local rivers with the same green dye.
The governor of Veneto, Luca Zaia, criticized the act, calling it “a disrespect to our city, its history, and its fragility,” emphasizing the potential environmental risks associated with such actions.
Thunberg and the Extinction Rebellion activists also directed criticism at Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her stance against “ambitious climate action” during COP30, which wrapped up last Friday. The conference ended with a somewhat lukewarm declaration suggesting a “collective effort” to combat climate disasters, but critics voiced disappointment that it lacked clear recommendations to phase out fossil fuels or boost investment in sustainable practices.
The COP30 conference itself faced considerable challenges, including security issues and logistical problems, such as subpar facilities at the venue. Additionally, many participants reported difficulties finding suitable accommodations due to a shortage of hotel rooms and sky-high prices, with some resorting to unsatisfactory options.
